pre-care & after-care for pmu

Updated: Feb 19

A simple yet effective way to prepare for your permanent makeup appointment and the ultimate guide on how to take care of it! Long-term!

Here's a little secret...the best results START with proper pre-care.

As a permanent makeup artist, our objective is to achieve the best results possible for the client's skin type. Given a proper skin analysis during the consultation, your pre-care should be discussed and given with clear instructions like the following:

  • No tanning by sun, spray or booth for a minimum of 2 weeks.

  • No waxing/tints for 1 week prior.

  • No botox/fillers within 3 weeks of your appointment.

  • Gently exfoliate the area to be treated if dry.

  • Keep the area moisturized. (No harsh skincare like AHA's or retinols)

  • Lip appointments should consider Arnica tablets or Antivirals if prone to cold sores.

  • Avoid ibuprofen or any NSAID medication 24 hours before appointment

  • No alcohol 24 hours before appointment.

  • No caffeine morning of appointment.

Properly prep your skin for optimal results!

After-care and it's importance

Now that the tattoo work is done doesn't mean the job is over! Your skin is part of a living breathing organism and we need to encourage proper healing for our freshly done PMU. It's crucial for clients to take recommended care of their new investment at home with clear instructions given such as:

  • Absorb first 24 hrs: Gently blot the area every hour or so with damp cloth to absorb excess lymph fluids

  • Cleanliness: Keep the area clean with provided cleanser and avoid touching it with unwashed hands. Gently cleanse AM and PM everyday the first week with a cotton pad, rinse with damp cotton pad and pat dry with cotton pad.

  • First 3 days you may wash up to 3x if you’re very oily or sweaty.

  • Moisturize: Apply a thin layer of healing balm provided after cleansing.

Appearance:

  • Flaky skin and peeling should be mostly completed by the second week. Any redness or irritation should be gone by 24-48 hours.

  • Pigment will be its darkest immediately after leading into the first few days to a week. After the first week you will notice minor flakey or dry skin and the color may appear lighter and softer.

  • Texture: The skin may still feel slightly dry or textured, but this should improve as healing progresses. You may continue to use the aftercare provided and apply a thin layer of healing balm over tight, dry and\or flakey skin.

Avoid!

  • Avoid direct sun exposure to the area or tanning of any kind for 4 weeks.

  • Avoid excess heat, steam or sweating for 1 week- 2 weeks

  •  No swimming in pools or beaches for 2 weeks.

  • Avoid makeup on the treated area for 2 weeks.

  • Avoid facial treatments, botox, fillers for 4 weeks.

  • Avoid any harsh skincare products on treated area for 4 weeks

  • Avoid scratching, picking and exfoliating as this can lead to pigment loss and scarring.

Optimal healed results starts with optimal prep and healing.
